‘Marlene Rose hardly says a word to anyone, yet everyone has so much to say on her behalf.’
Clever Marlene held everyone in thrall to her silence. For a few magical months in 1972, the world promised to change - but hope was snatched away, along with her illegitimate baby. This time, keeping quiet is not enough.
Over the next twenty years, three disparate sets of lives find their paths take on new direction The riotous family, the beautiful couple and the brilliant young doctor, all are inexorably bound to the leafy edges of Middlesex, where Marlene Rose’s life unravels in silent tragedy. Here, with her behaviour becoming more bizarre, she executes her wordless revenge on these innocent strangers and devastation threatens one and all.
The Cause of Marlene Rose edition by Rebecca J Cunningham Literature Fiction eBooks
The story begins in 1972 and follows the lives of nine characters over the course of twenty years. Marlene is a socially withdrawn young woman who gives her baby up for adoption. Living alone in the house she inherits from her father, she becomes ever more reclusive, her only friend being a young man from the neighborhood, named Bobby, who is studying to become a psychiatrist. Eventually this evolves into something of lukewarm affair, and Bobby also becomes involved with Alison Kennedy, whose marriage to Andrew appears to falling apart, as the professor Andrew is engaged in an affair with one of his students, Gloria Kavanagh. Gloria's parents, a lower-working class couple who constantly bicker but are clearly made for one another, find themselves thrust into the upper-middle class after winning the lottery. Alison's and Andrew's sometimes friend Clare also figures prominently in the story. All of these characters are portrayed with clarity such that they come to life on the page. But for most of them, it's a turbulent and sad life, and they all seem at times to be both victims and perpetrators of manipulation and deceit. It's a rather dark story, but is lightened by humor and sharp perception. The witty and forceful Clare, and the "fish out of water" Kavanaghs, provide a good deal of welcome humor.
Rebecca J. Cunningham's writing is sharp and evocative, but hard to access, particularly in the sections describing Marlene's perceptions. Often I'd have to read a sentence or passage several times, in the way that one reads a lyric poem.
The story spins a broad web of time and characters, people whose paths meet and diverge in numerous and sometimes seemingly incidental ways, forming connections that draw them ever closer together toward the story's shocking climax. At the center of this web is Marlene, who rarely says a word but appears to be somehow strangely manipulating characters and events. Or perhaps she is merely caught in a web of her own design. I really don't know. It's an ambitious story that, like Marlene, does not reveal itself easily, where the line between reality and fantasy appears sometimes to be blurred. The attentive reader will find it well worth the effort it demands, and even the casual reader will be drawn in and held by the characters and story.
A highly original, inventive and unique work of literary art.
